Tile Calculator

Tiling jobs stall when you run out of tiles mid-wall — and the next batch may not match. Enter your area and tile size below to get the exact tile count and boxes to buy, waste included.

How many tiles do you need?

Enter the area size and your tile size to get the exact number of tiles and boxes to buy — waste included.

Your estimate

Area to cover—
Tiles needed—
Boxes to buy—

Uses the tile’s nominal size; grout gaps slightly reduce the count in practice and the waste buffer covers the difference. Use 15% waste for diagonal layouts, large-format tiles, or rooms with many corners. Keep spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs.

How to use this tile calculator

  1. Measure the length and width of the floor or wall you are tiling.
  2. Enter your tile size — the nominal size printed on the box.
  3. Enter the tiles per box from the box label.
  4. Keep waste at 10% for straight layouts; raise it to 15% for diagonal layouts or large-format tiles.

How we calculate tiles

Area = length × width. Tile area = tile length × tile width. Tiles needed = area ÷ tile area, increased by your waste allowance and rounded up — you cannot buy part of a tile. Boxes = tiles needed ÷ tiles per box, rounded up.

Tile calculator FAQs

How many tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

It depends on the tile size. With 12×12 inch tiles (1 sq ft each) you need 100 tiles before waste — 110 with the standard 10% allowance. With 12×24 inch tiles (2 sq ft each) you need 55. Enter your tile size above for an exact count.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Add 10% for straight layouts in simple rooms, 15% for diagonal layouts, large-format tiles or rooms with many corners. Always keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs — batches vary in shade.

Does the calculator account for grout lines?

It uses the tile’s nominal size. Grout gaps slightly reduce the real tile count, and the waste allowance more than covers the difference on typical jobs.

How many tiles come in a box?

It varies by tile — boxes commonly cover 10–15 sq ft. Check the box label for the tile count and coverage, and enter it in the calculator for an exact box count.
