Short answer: installed tile flooring typically costs $10–$30 per sq ft. Ceramic sits at the bottom of the range, porcelain in the middle, and natural stone and mosaics at the top — mainly because tile labor ($5–$10 per sq ft) is the highest of any common flooring.
Tile installation cost by tile type
| Tile type | Installed cost per sq ft |
|---|---|
| Ceramic | $10–$15 |
| Porcelain | $12–$18 |
| Natural stone (marble, slate, travertine) | $15–$25 |
| Mosaic / small-format | $18–$30 |
A standard 40 sq ft bathroom floor in ceramic therefore runs about $400–$600 installed; a 120 sq ft kitchen in porcelain, roughly $1,450–$2,150.
The extras nobody quotes upfront
Backer board or uncoupling membrane ($1–$3 per sq ft), old floor removal ($1.50–$3.50 per sq ft), waterproofing for wet areas, and leveling uneven subfloors all sit outside the headline rate. Patterns cost more too — diagonal, herringbone and large-format layouts add 15–30% to labor because they are slower and need more cuts.
Where you can legitimately save
Large, simple rooms with a straight grid layout are the cheapest tile work there is. Doing your own demo and haul-away saves a few dollars per square foot, and choosing a standard 12×12 or 12×24 tile avoids the labor premium that small and oversized formats carry.
