How to use this flooring cost calculator

  1. Measure your room’s length and width.
  2. Pick the flooring type — typical material and labor prices fill in automatically; adjust them to your local quotes.
  3. Tick underlayment or old-floor removal if they apply to your project.
  4. Compare the total and per-sq-ft cost against contractor quotes.

How we calculate flooring cost

Material cost = (area + waste allowance) × material price — you pay for every box you open, including cuts. Labor, underlayment and removal are charged on the actual floor area. Total installed cost = material + labor + extras, and the per-sq-ft figure is the total divided by the floor area — the fairest way to compare quotes.

Typical installed cost per sq ft

Vinyl plank (LVP)$6–$9 per sq ft

Flooring cost FAQs

How much does it cost to floor a 12×12 room?

For laminate, about $760 installed (roughly $475 material + $288 labor at typical prices). The same room in hardwood runs about $1,990. Tile lands in between on material but has the highest labor. Run the calculator above with your local prices for a tighter number.

What is the average flooring installation cost per square foot?

Across materials, most homeowners pay $5–$18 per sq ft installed: material typically runs $2–$10 per sq ft and labor $2–$6 per sq ft for most floors ($5–$10 for tile), with tile and hardwood at the top of both ranges.

Is labor or material more expensive?

It depends on the floor. With laminate and carpet they are roughly equal. With tile, labor often costs more than the tile itself; with premium hardwood, the material dominates.

What extra costs should I budget for?

The common ones: underlayment (about $0.50/sq ft), removing and disposing of the old floor ($1.50–$3.50/sq ft), subfloor leveling or repairs, new baseboards or trim, and moving furniture. Get each one itemized in any quote you accept.
